4×6 centimetres is not 4×6 inches
A 4×6 cm portrait measures 40×60 mm with a 2:3 width-to-height ratio. Printer paper labelled 4×6 inches is approximately 10×15 cm and is much larger. Check the unit, not just the numbers.
Use 4×6 cm only when requested. For official applications, dimensions are one requirement alongside background, framing, file format and restrictions on editing.
| Photo | Dimensions | Pixels at 300 PPI | Width:height |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4×6 cm | 40×60 mm | 472×709 px | 2:3 |
Pixel dimensions depend on export resolution. 300 PPI is a reference for print calculations; a DPI metadata value cannot restore detail to a small image.
Calculate pixels as centimetres ÷ 2.54 × PPI and round to the nearest integer. If an application specifies different pixels or file limits, follow its instructions.
For online applications, read the file specification
A digital image has no fixed centimetre size on screen. The receiving portal may require JPEG, specific pixel dimensions and a maximum file size. Read the instructions beside its upload field.
If compression is needed, inspect the eyes, hair and shoulder edges afterwards. Do not submit a screenshot of a watermarked preview. Keep a high-quality original for exporting another version.
Recheck framing in the taller 2:3 crop
Use even lighting and an eye-level camera, with the full head and shoulders included. Keep the face centred and leave room above the hair and below the chin. Avoid distortion from a close selfie.
A framing adjustment that works in 3×4 may look different in 4×6. Review each crop individually. Use the receiving authority’s head and eye-position diagram when provided.
Prepare and preview a 4×6 photo
Upload a new photo or take one, then select 4×6 cm in Rakuphoto. Size selection alone is enough to start. For an official document, check the relevant document guidance and the authority’s current requirements.
Keep suitable original clothing. Use background or outfit changes only when permitted. Inspect hair edges and facial features against the original before deciding to buy.
Check the finished print with a ruler
A finished 4×6 cm photo should measure 40×60 mm. When printing on a 10×15 cm sheet, use that sheet’s paper size and print at Actual size/100%, without automatic enlargement.
Do not stretch the image in a word processor and estimate its size from the screen. Tell the print shop the size in centimetres, quantity and that the crop must preserve the head.
